Our room looked perfect and modern, and the staff were helpful and friendly when we asked to see all the rooms before booking. But the walls were extremely thin. We heard everything our neighbours did, and it made for an uncomfortable and indecent experience. If you're a parent with children under 18, don't visit here, you'll be so traumatized. That's why I'm giving it 2 stars.

This was my second time at Umtali. The service is great and the staff are friendly, but the thin walls meant I could hear everything in the other rooms. A neighbour snored all night, and I didn't sleep at all. I struggled to sleep for 3 days straight. The rooms also don't have a mini bar fridge or microwave, even though food is served early and there's nowhere to warm or keep it overnight. Definitely not coming back.

It's a great place to stop between Johannesburg and East London, and one of the few with large family rooms for families with three children. The owner always remembers you from previous years. The restaurant serves delicious meals, though they're pricey. The beautifully landscaped grounds have big trees, and after a long day's drive it's really relaxing to hear the wind whispering through the leaves.
