It was the best family holiday, and our furry companions came along too. Field and Stream in Dullstroom feels like a peaceful, beautiful little world of its own, and I can hardly believe a place like this still exists. It really helped us feel grounded.

The farm at Field and stream is gorgeous and we enjoyed our stay, but it’s a long way out of town and the road in is bad. The accommodation felt expensive for how clean it was, and there was an unpleasant smell in the bathroom. The loft isn’t suitable for older people. The dogs loved being on the farm, though the owner didn’t seem to welcome them. Also, the wood sold there was very wet, so bring your own.

It was relaxing being out in the middle of nowhere, and Gavin and Greg were very helpful. We came with our daughter and grandparents. You’ll need a high-clearance vehicle to get in and out.

The whole family had a wonderful time, including our two six-year-old girls, who loved it. Hikers will especially enjoy this stunning place, with its dams, rivers, waterfalls and natural swimming pools. There are lots of birds, too. The water at the initiation pool is so clean you can drink it. The road is rough, so a 4x4 will handle it best. My husband was delighted when the drive suddenly turned into a bit of off-roading.
