The rules at Paxton Luxury Apartments were a lot, and the whole stay brought back boarding-school hostel memories, without the freedom. I booked one of their expensive rooms on the 6th floor, but there was no aircon. They limit showers to two minutes, once a day, and even post that on the shower door. At checkout, during the required room inspection, I got a spot fine because a towel had shifted overnight and my oily hair left a small mark on the pillowcase. When I asked if the pillows and linen could be soaked and washed, staff became hostile, and others joined in saying, “fine her, charge her card.” They said I’d get the fine back if laundry proved the mark came out. The rooms were neat and clean, but this wasn’t the seaside luxury experience I wanted in Gqeberha.

The room was neat and cosy, and reception staff were warm and friendly when I booked an apartment on Sunday, 13 July. But there was no order at night. People shouted, sang, banged doors and ran up and down, so I hardly slept. I was disappointed nobody stepped in to reprimand them. The place is lovely, but it felt like a school camp.

The power went out during our visit, and the backup power failed too, which did affect the experience a little. Still, that was outside the staff’s control. We arrived early on 26 July 2025, soaked from the rain, and asked whether an early check-in was possible. The two women on the day shift at reception were so polite and understanding, and efficiently arranged a room swap so we could get settled sooner. Their kindness and professionalism set us up for a great stay. The hospitality was top-tier, and I’d recommend Paxton for its friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere.

We were asked to shower only once a day because of a water issue in the area, and they didn’t give us a gate remote. There are cameras around, yet nobody could see us at the gate when we needed to get in or out. On arrival, we were told about a R1000 security deposit and that the morning shift should have called a day or so earlier to explain it. Apparently there was no handover between the morning and afternoon staff on 25 Dec 2024. Nobody apologized, and customer service was awful. We wanted to cancel, but they wouldn’t refund us. I’ve stayed at hotels and self-catering places all over SA and have never been treated this way. These so-called luxury apartments in the “friendly city” felt completely unfriendly. I was afraid to use anything in the room in case I had to pay for breakages, stains and who knows what else. It felt like Murphy’s law. If you want to be treated like a third-class citizen, book here.

The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the building’s basement parking made us feel secure. There was also security in the street outside. We slept well on the comfortable bed, with no street noise disturbing us. The apartment was spotless, with a lovely balcony overlooking the sea, and we enjoyed the amazing pool deck. The pool itself is small, but the beach views are wonderful. We got takeaway and ate there in the evening sun, with grills, tables and benches available if you want to have a braai. We only stayed one night, but it was a lovely visit.
