We ended up at The Jays Guest House after the Council my husband was working for that day forgot to book our usual hotel. What a nice surprise. The owners are lovely and welcoming, and the B&B felt comfortable and homely. We'll make The Jays our home away from home whenever we visit Pietermaritzburg. Three stars don't do it justice, it deserves five.

The owners are kind and always around to help if anything comes up. There are three lovely rooms at the top of the garden, along with a few rooms attached to the house that aren't as nice. The main problem is the Wi-Fi, which comes and goes and can be an issue some evenings. Once I also found old food left in a cupboard by a previous guest, which wasn't good.

The owners are warm, welcoming and always accommodating, and the home cooked breakfasts are delicious. Rooms are clean and reasonably priced. Most guests seem to return, which makes sense when you're treated so well.

The B&B is attached to the owner's house in a peaceful suburb. Guests get personal service, with a friendly chat now and then. The rooms feel a bit dated for what you pay.
