Umngazi was our honeymoon, and the memories still make us want to go back. We had an incredible time, enjoying activities and exploring as well as simply relaxing. The room's views were unbeatable, and the spa felt very professional, with outstanding massages. Food throughout the stay was sensational. From arrival, everything felt seamless. The staff were organized, welcoming and friendly, and treated us like royalty. They even had a special congratulations for us, such a thoughtful touch. The resort exceeded all our hopes and gave us an experience we'll treasure forever. We still daydream about Umngazi and can't rave about it enough.

We took a cruise on the Mouth and loved the guide's knowledge and enthusiasm. Renting a double canoe and paddling was lovely too. The beach felt like Friday and Robinson Crusoe, with nobody else around. I hope Umngazi stays this way and doesn't turn into another urban beach resort. Our cottage had a sea view at every hour, day and night, and the thatched cottages, lovely gardens and furnishings made the place feel peaceful and minimalist, with white floors and furniture. The food was amazing. We had three meals a day, with a huge range of fresh ingredients and so many ways to put them together, despite being far from town. We spent three evenings here and were so happy to have found such a beautiful place.

The rooms were clean and suited the resort, and the hotel recommended Sun Shuttle Services from Umtata airport, who were very efficient. The service was excellent throughout. We ate well all day, with plenty of choice, including a Saturday fish feast and a relaxed Sunday braai. The bar had a nice vibe, and the spa is well worth it, with some of the best treatments we've had at reasonable prices. Finishing a session by relaxing in a spa bath with my wife and looking out over the river and beach was special. A great place to chill out, unwind and enjoy good food and raw nature. The setting is magnificent, with stunning beaches a short ride across the river on the complimentary ferry, which runs when you request it.

It's hard to write a bad review about such a breathtaking place, but our booking was mishandled. We booked the deluxe honeymoon suite for five nights, then on day four were told to move to a normal bungalow because the suite had been double booked. We had to check out by 10am and couldn't get another room until 14:00, leaving us with four hours and nowhere to go. Communication was nonexistent. I asked three times to speak to a manager and got nothing, not even an apology. In the end, we checked out a day early and let the circus carry on.

Thank you for your response. My comments on the 2025 Vukandlule Santa Clause initiative come from lived experience, not perception. Umngazi Hotel curated, approved and delivered this event as something appropriate for the local village, so it is fair to discuss it on those terms rather than recast it as a difference in interpretation. The Santa experience for hotel guests differs materially from the one for the local village in presence, engagement and intention. Those two experiences shouldn't be conflated. I acknowledge the involvement of a respected community member, but respect alone doesn't mean someone has the expertise to design or deliver a meaningful experience for children. A brand operating at or close to five-star level should bring the same thoughtfulness, care and intentional design to every engagement. This is about accountability for what was actually delivered, not symbolism, goodwill or stated intentions. When a tradition becomes a formality, it's fair to ask whether it still reflects the brand's values. I appreciate your willingness to reflect. Umngazi brings significant value to this area and makes many of us proud to be from this community. That's precisely why I'm offering this feedback with care and with the high regard in which the establishment is held. I hope future versions of this tradition show the excellence, dignity and intention Umngazi is known for. The 2025 Vukandlule Santa event has deteriorated over time from a carefully considered experience into something hollow and perfunctory. That's particularly troubling for a four-star hotel and spa operating within, and benefiting from, the community whose children are invited. In the early years, there was a sledge, a visible Santa and genuine interaction with the children. Those parts were steadily removed: first there was just a chair and little engagement, then a static, non-interactive presence, and this year only a brief drive-by. The vehicle moved so fast that many village children didn't see Santa at all. This gradual decline feels like more than logistics. It suggests a troubling lack of intention. These children belong to the same village as the hotel, so I'd expect greater responsibility, respect and care toward the host community's children, rather than an event that feels increasingly rushed and disengaged. Childhood joy takes presence, time and sincere human connection. Without those, what's left is just a gesture emptied of meaning. If Umngazi River Bungalows wants to live up to the values implied by its four-star status, it should rethink how this event is run and who is trusted with it. An experience for local village children should be led by people who understand that dignity, imagination and care are the foundation of meaningful community engagement.
