For my 50th birthday on 27 March, we decided to get away and celebrate. We had an amazing time in our spacious flat, with two massive rooms and room for everything. It was fully furnished with a washing machine, dishwasher, TVs in all three spaces, walk-in closets, a Victorian-style bath, and balconies with a gas braai. The estate is lush and beautiful. The reception has a rustic charm, and the view from the top of its stairs out to the pools was phenomenal. The restaurant food was tasty, though portions felt small for the price. The bar was cozy, and you could also relax by the pool and be served. You can’t park close to your flat, so there’s a bit of walking. There’s a service you can call to pick you up from your door or car and take you to reception or your flat. Since it’s self-catering, it was handy that there’s a small shopping centre just outside the estate for groceries.

The part that really upset me was coming back to find my charger, left plugged in behind the bedside table at the only two-prong outlet, with both the cable and block bent out of shape. I assume the table was pushed back into it. There wasn’t even a note to apologize. Reception said they’d tell the cleaning team, but that doesn’t fix my charger or charge my phone. The guidebook lists things guests have to pay for if they break them. I’d like the same rule to apply when the property breaks something. It was my first time at Zimbali, and it wasn’t what I expected. The place needs an upgrade. Things are old and worn, the showers have mould, and some of the bedding is stained. But fine, we move.

Getting on and off the property was a ridiculous process. It made me feel like a criminal instead of a guest. The service was awful from the moment we pulled up at reception, where nobody was there to greet us. We waited 20 minutes for someone to take our bags and show us the room. The restaurant was just as frustrating. We were the first customers and the only ones there at 715, but it took 15 minutes to get a pot of hot water and a tea bag, then another five for the coffee. The room had a washer-dryer, but its drying function didn’t work, so we ended up drying our clothes in the oven on convection mode.

We left after waiting 30 minutes with no service. A waiter seated us, then seemed to look away, and we were there with a baby. At reception, when they asked how things had gone and we said it was terrible, they sent us back down the stairs to find the manager. I really question the customer service. I wouldn’t recommend this place, the pool, or the service at all.

The staff, both inside and outside, were helpful, and this place is so beautiful 😍. I think the pool could use a clean, though. Definitely a new favourite.
