Shoestrings Backpackers & Bar

We didn’t stay at the backpackers, but travellers and locals had recommended it as a lively bar. The location is good, and it’s a cosy place to hang out for drinks. The bar service was quick and friendly. Food was another story: it felt very overpriced, the cafe meal took over an hour to arrive, and the food was terrible. We ordered quarter chicken and rice plus a margarita pizza, and I had the driest chicken of my life there. Very surprising for african braai. I wouldn’t recommend eating here.

The grounds are pretty, the staff are super helpful, and there’s lots to do, including volleyball, the pool and pool bar, and the courtyard. There’s plenty of food to buy and drivers nearby to hire for a ride. This is a fun hostel for people who want to stay up late at the bar or pool, with the latest beats playing on weekdays and weekends, and friendly people around. Amenities are basic and suit a budget stay. My private room was as advertised, though it was missing outlets for charging all my devices. The rooms aren’t soundproof, so it’s not a great fit if you need a quiet place to sleep early.

I had an awesome time here. There’s a lovely pool to cool off in, amazing food throughout the day, and plenty of activities in the area. Close enough to the Falls that I could walk back and forth every day. It made an epic base for my stay, definitely recommended!

I’ve never stayed overnight, so I can’t really rate the rooms. But Shoestrings Backpackers Lodge is my go-to for unwinding after work, day drinking, dancing, and letting loose a bit. The big events are always a vibe, but even on quieter, random days I seem to meet incredible people. There’s an easy, welcoming energy, like everyone’s there to have a good time and you’re instantly part of it. The music, people, and atmosphere just work. Memories happen without you even trying. Still one of my favourite spots, always.
