Esther made the stay feel like home. She’d cook dinner some nights and bake cakes now and then. One was so good I asked her for the recipe. She’s lovely to talk with, and I could practice Spanish with her or switch to English when I needed a break. After I left, she even invited my boyfriend and me back for tea, sandwiches, cake, and champagne, so we could catch up with her and the great housemates I’d met. I was sad to leave, and if I return to Buenos Aires to study, I’ll stay with Esther again. Her apartment is right on famous Corrientes street, with shops, restaurants, theaters, and the subway just outside. Some of the city’s best steak restaurants are right beside it, and there’s something happening outside every night, giving the area a lively feel. The building is secure, and despite being on the main strip, the apartment is quiet. The rooms are lovely, and the bathrooms are clean with a steady, strong supply of hot water. There’s also a large outdoor area for studying or relaxing.

I spent nearly two months at Ester’s place in January and February this year. Traveling alone, I really appreciated how she looked after me and made sure things got sorted when I ran into trouble. She was a joy to stay with. She also surprised my roommates and me with different homemade cakes, which were delicious. I had a really good time there and will definitely come back!

Avenida Corrientes puts you right among theaters, cinemas, bookstores, restaurants, and even a Beatles Museum. I enjoyed walking around and didn’t need to take the subway. The rooms were very comfortable, and the house was beautiful, clean, and tidy. I came to Buenos Aires alone, but meeting Sra. Esther quickly made me feel I’d found a friend. She’s warm, gentle, kind, and intelligent, and a wonderful host. I was happy with my seven days there and wished I could stay longer. Even after I left, she invited me for coffee. If you want a comfortable stay in Buenos Aires with a great location and a host you won’t forget, I’d choose Homestay.

The guests I met were all very nice. Most seemed to be travelers spending longer in Latin America and taking Spanish classes nearby. September through November is apparently quieter for tourism, and while I was there the house had at most one or two other guests. It wouldn’t suit someone looking for a party house. I felt safe walking home alone at night on the bright, busy av. Corrientes. The apartment is central, within walking distance of Casa Rosada, Puerto Madero, and Recoleta Cemetery, each roughly a 30-minute walk. There are also good subway and bus connections. It’s not where most of the clubs are, but that worked for me: I could walk to Spanish school and many sights, then take a cab when I went out at night. The entrance looked a little sketchy at first, but inside the apartment is large, very clean, and has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, a big kitchen, and a patio, which is unusual for the area. The rooms are cozy and fairly spacious, with big windows, lots of light, and plenty of storage. They’re quiet at night since the windows face the building’s interior, and the WiFi worked well throughout. The house has everything you need, and Esther keeps it spotless. I thought it was good value for a homestay in BA. I stayed for a month in November while studying Spanish, and Esther made the experience special. She’s incredibly kind and intelligent. When I got sick, she gave me medicine; she showed me where to exchange money safely and even ironed my clothes when I was in a rush. She cooked for me several times and held a BBQ for everyone one weekend. I also enjoyed staying in and talking with her, and learned a lot about Argentina. She speaks English too, so it’s easy to communicate if your Spanish is very basic or nonexistent. I’m grateful for how much she helped me, and would recommend her home, especially to solo travelers who want to feel at home in Argentina.

Esther was charming, and she even baked the tenants an amazing chocolate cake. The apartment is bright, spacious, clean, and quiet, with roomy bedrooms, enough bathrooms, and space for everyone. I could use the kitchen and terrace, and there was free WiFi and air-conditioning, which was much needed in BA. It’s on Avenida Corrientes, within walking distance of the city attractions. I stayed a week in November 2013 while taking a Spanish course, and would stay there again if I’m back in BA soon. Agnieszka Kania, Poland
