Hotel Gungau

The food is a big part of why we keep coming back. Every dish has been delicious, and the chefs seem to put real care and passion into what they make. The staff are warm and attentive too, and nothing ever feels like too much trouble. For 20 years, our family and close friends have spent winter holidays and New Year's Eve at Hotel Gungau. The anticipation starts well before we arrive. The owners have become dear friends, and from the moment we walk in, we feel welcome and looked after. That family feeling runs through the whole hotel and gives us so many lovely memories. The rooms are a good size, spotless, and inviting. For skiing, the location is hard to beat, right by the valley station of the Zwölferkogelbahn cable car. We can even look out at the slopes over breakfast and get excited for the day. Hotel Gungau feels like a place where we belong, and we look forward to returning each year.

We came for three days just before Christmas 2025, and felt at ease as soon as we arrived. The quiet, festive atmosphere made the short break especially enjoyable, and we’ll definitely come back. Breakfast was fresh and generous, a great way to start the day. After skiing, the clean, comfortable rooms were just right for relaxing, and the inviting spa was a real bonus in the run-up to Christmas. The hotel itself is cozy and well kept, with a great location for a winter stay in Saalbach Hinterglemm. The staff were friendly, attentive, and easy to deal with. You can tell they put care into the details. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and would recommend it.

The restaurant has a pleasant feel, the staff were really friendly, and the salad bar lets you put together your own side salad, which was a nice touch. We ate à la carte, but the food overall let us down. The Käsespätzle was oily, like a lump of cheese, with raw onions. The vegetables alongside one of the meat dishes also seemed more like reheated frozen veg than something freshly made.

The breakfast buffet was very good, and the spa area is lovely. The hotel is in a great spot beside the 12-person chairlift, though the rooms are furnished quite simply. The service staff were very friendly, but I can't say the same about the owner. Because of her, I won't return. Dinner options were limited, and the food was only okay.
