We were pleasantly surprised by Shady Rest Motel during our two weeks passing through Gympie. It’s a quiet spot just off the highway, yet only about a 10-minute walk to town for shops, cafes or dinner. The owners were welcoming, accommodating and really helpful, so we felt at home. There’s an outdoor saltwater pool for a dip after driving, plus BBQ facilities for a simple meal, and free parking right outside the room. Our room was spotless, with fresh linen, a comfy bed, plenty of hot water, towels, toiletries, tea and coffee, and air conditioning that worked perfectly. For the price, it’s clean, comfortable and quiet, and clearly run by people who care. We’d happily return next time we’re in the area, and recommend it if you want a friendly, no-fuss motel in Gympie.

Parking was easy, and the motel is close to town, shops and places to eat. The owners were genuinely friendly and helpful, and the room was quiet at night, clean and comfortable. The bed was comfy, the air conditioning worked perfectly, and I had everything I needed for a relaxed stay. It’s great value for the price and a no-stress place to stop in Gympie. I’d stay again and happily recommend it.

The room was okay if all you need is a bed, and the price was reasonable. Check-in was straightforward, leaving was simple, and there was a chain lock on the door, though a small child could reach it. But there were a lot of problems. A tiled step inside the room sat unevenly against the carpet, with a metal edge that wasn’t level with either surface. There was a gap by the bathroom mirror opening into the roof, the toilet hadn’t been cleaned properly, and the fridge wasn’t on when we arrived. The air conditioner was tucked into a small hallway and struggled to cool the room. After rain, small flying ants swarmed the bathroom, so there must be other gaps somewhere. The bed’s castor wheels seemed to have no brakes and slid around. Parking was supposed to be front-in, but the spaces weren’t really big enough for SUVs or utes. Our tailgate was left exposed to the weather, which made getting prams and suitcases out annoying.

The pool was amazing, and they even got a brand new BBQ while we were there. The hosts were welcoming and friendly, and accommodated everything we needed. Great spot, would definitely recommend it.

Gympie gets hot, so it’s good there’s a small, clean pool to cool off in. Helene is a great host, and the people around here are the kind of hard-working, no-nonsense Australians I love. They treat people with that wholesome country respect. The family clearly takes pride in the place. The rooms are cozy and ultra clean, the price is excellent, and they do a really nice continental breakfast in the morning for about $26. It’s not fancy and doesn’t pretend to be. Just a very clean, affordable, comfy bed for the night hosted by lovely people. What more could you ask for?
