Hobart City Apartments

A bus stop is right outside, and it’s easy to get groceries at the nearby Woolworths. The apartments sit in the main shopping centre, with an excellent Banjo's Bakery across the street where we picked up our first coffee each morning. The harbour is an easy 10-15 minute walk. During our February visit, my husband and I spent four nights in a very spacious studio with a kitchen area and separate bathroom. It was scrupulously clean, and reception staff were friendly and helpful. I’ll definitely stay here again next time I’m in Hobart.

Our room was clean, in good condition and tidied daily, but the supplies were basic. The streaming service didn’t work during our stay, despite a receptionist trying to fix it on day one. He offered another room the next day, but on NYE we didn’t want to pack up and move mid-stay, so we asked for a discount instead. The room was quite expensive, and streaming seemed like a reasonable basic service for that price. They offered 20% off the first day, but nothing for the next two. After long discussions on day two and again before we left, they agreed to 10%. We were told the manager had already approved it, but there was no record, or the receptionist had forgotten. We also heard much worse experiences at reception. The corridors need a refresh. The central location is handy, about a 10-15 minute walk to the wharf and Salamanca, but parking is a problem: they don’t have enough spaces and street parking is difficult. Given the price and unpredictability, I don’t think I’ll stay again.

I spent a full week here in early January and never had trouble with street noise, even on the 5th floor. One night some loud guests came back to their rooms for about 30 seconds, but that’s hardly the hotel’s fault. There was no problem with the bus stop out front, day or night, just people waiting for the bus. Some rooms look onto another building, but that wasn’t a big deal for me. If the view matters more to you than location, service, space and amenities, you might prefer somewhere else. The aircon worked perfectly, even on hot days, and there’s a back entrance if you’d rather avoid people. Staff were always friendly, clear and easy to deal with, whether checking in or arranging luggage storage after checkout. My spacious room was cleaned daily, and I was never disturbed when I wanted a quiet morning. The location is hard to beat, right in the middle of town with Japanese and Malaysian food downstairs and lots of other options around. The harbour, where most tours leave from, is an easy 10-15 minute walk away. A few details that might help, since some reviews here are out of date: the room had a toaster, kettle, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and full cookware set, so I didn’t need to ask for anything extra. The couch was roomy and comfortable, great for reading for an hour each afternoon. There’s a fold-out table and chairs under the TV for meals, though the coffee tables by the couch work too. I had a great stay and can recommend it.

I stayed with my family and couldn’t fault the hotel. The location was a real bonus, with Malaysian and Japanese restaurants downstairs. Staff, service and cleanliness were all excellent.
