I’ve lived here for two and a half years and worked for the place for a while. I’m grateful for the friendships and memories, but the living conditions in most apartments have been bad for my physical and mental health. I’m glad to be leaving. The Orion apartments are run down, apart from 21, which they use for short stays. Mould is all through rooms and furniture, and sunlight doesn’t reach 80% of the apartments, so good luck getting rid of it. We’ve had mice in our apartment and maggots hatching from the carpet in summer. Some residents make you feel uncomfortable and unsafe; there’s rubbish on the footpaths, and people in other apartments scream and fight. The washing and drying machines are broken and expensive, sink taps are broken, the internet drops out often, and there are power blackouts. Security are rude and unreasonable. They charge utility and cleaning fees, but cleaners don’t properly clean the apartments. It’s overpriced for what you get, and it can be hard to get your bond back. I’d avoid it, or get out as soon as you can. The only benefit I found is that it humbles you and makes you work harder so you never end up in that kind of living situation again.

The bed was comfortable, and the desk and chair were good, but I’m reluctant to stay again at $280 a week. I was there for a two-week short stay and didn’t get a linen change. When I arrived, it was musty and smelled of mould. The shower soap dish was caked in grime, the pillowcase reeked as if it hadn’t dried properly, and the sheets gave me a burning rash. There were no plates, cups, or pots and pans, but I asked and they supplied them. The fire alarm kept going off on the first night, and I couldn’t stop it. The night watch wasn’t happy when I first contacted them, though they offered to come out. I eventually called the fire brigade, and SCU Village weren’t happy that I did. People were partying all the time, so it was very noisy. You basically get used to it.

For a one-week short stay, they gave me dirty sheets, a tissue inside the pillowcase, and a quilt with no cover. There were bed bugs, mould, and no basic appliances. It may be cheap, but honestly it should be free. I’d rather be asleep than in this hellscape.

In Lismore SCU, Unit O21 is the only safe one. The other units have dangerous amounts of mould. Food won’t keep, and good luck finding flyscreens, shower doors, or lounges without mould on them. I was told to clean or replace mouldy things myself. Some PowerPoints don’t work, and slugs, mould, insects, and maggots are common throughout Orion. Don’t come unless you have no other option.

Honestly, zero stars. I was in a three-bedroom unit and asked to move into a two-bedroom because I wanted a little more space. There was nothing wrong with my original housemates. They moved me into a two-bedroom with a 36-year-old man, when I was only 18. During the three weeks I had to stay with him, he harassed me. He also yelled out the window at other people living at sirus and called them names. The higher authorities didn’t care that he did this and didn’t remove him from campus like they should have. It’s expensive and not worth the money. Don’t stay here. Go to the Gold Coast campus, or better yet, choose a university that’s actually good.
