We had a very disappointing experience with the activities and the departure arrangements, even though the accommodation itself was lovely. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, and the kitchen utensils were great. The lodge is quite remote, though, and the surroundings felt artificial and dull. I can't recommend it. On the platypus tour with Nathan, he barely spoke. He seemed like a nice guy, but wasn't suited to guiding. We had to draw questions out of him, and his answers were polite but very short, so the tour went by in silence and felt tiring and boring. Lunch was included, but our group of six waited more than an hour for reheated frozen food. Nathan didn't do anything about the delay until we asked if it normally took that long. He said it didn't, then went to check, and the food arrived about ten minutes later. We strongly suspect the order had been forgotten, since the food clearly needed no preparation time. We lost an hour of the tour we'd paid for. Leaving was stressful too. Nobody told us when the shuttle to the Greyhound bus would depart. We got up at a normal time, packed and were about to eat breakfast when we were suddenly told the shuttle was leaving in five minutes. We couldn't have breakfast and were extremely stressed, all of which could have been avoided with the departure time. We had been much too early at the bus stop.

The tour was a highlight, with knowledgeable guides and stunning lookout spots. Thanks to the dedicated staff, we saw a platypus, kangaroos and wallabies. The service was excellent throughout. A shuttle picked us up on arrival, and when there were no buses running and we'd run out of hope, they drove us all the way to Airlie Beach. That care made a real difference. Our room was spotless, the sheets were fresh, and it was already cool when we arrived. The location was great too, with a wakeboard park right out front and an Aldi across the street. I really loved staying here and would gladly come back.

The lodge is spotless, from the kitchen and lounge to the rooms and bathrooms, and the staff are amazing. I stayed two nights at the Mackay Adveture Lodge, where free breakfast is offered and there's a pool. Aldi and Hungry Jack’s are across the street, and they also have a wake board park and cycles to rent, handy for riding to the beach. When the owner spotted me walking to the lodge, he gave me a lift. Wonderful service. One thing to know: tours to Cape Hillborough and Eungella National Park only run Monday to Friday. I hadn't realised that. The area is remote and public transport isn't very flexible, though you can book an Uber or 123cab. The owner did everything he could to work out another option with me. I ended up hiring a car at the Mackay Airport with some other travelers, and we went to Cape Hillsborough for sunrise and Eungella on our own. I can definitely recommend staying here 😊.

Michelle and Amanda were the best part of our trip. Amanda was wonderful at the hostel, making everything seem easy and helping us with wakeboarding. She really is such a kind soul. Michelle was the sunniest, happiest tour guide we've had, though she couldn't keep the rain away! She knows a lot about platypuses and the whole Mackay area, and gave us great ideas for extra day trips and hikes. No wonder she's a certified Savannah Guide. -Travel Buddies group xoxo

They even picked us up from the Greyhound bus stop and took us back when we left. When we had trouble with the bus, they helped with so much kindness and enthusiasm, even though it wasn't their responsibility. The team is super friendly, and the hostel is fantastic. Rooms, bathrooms, kitchen and common areas are clean and beautifully furnished, with everything you need. The excursions are lovely and worthwhile, and in the afternoon you can relax by the outdoor pool or go wakeboarding at the park next door. I'd recommend it to everyone!
