The manager and staff made the stay, especially Wendy at reception, who was a superstar. Everyone was friendly and chatty, and I liked the vibe. The other guests seemed nice too. The inn isn't fancy, but it gets the basics right, which matters most, and does that perfectly. My room was huge and practical, with lots of power points, a small fridge, and a basket of plates, cups, glasses, and utensils, plus a jug. The air conditioning worked fine, and there was a nice choice of tea. I appreciate variety, especially when it's good. The little milk bottles were a nice touch, much better than creamers or drink boxes that spray milk everywhere. The location is excellent, near the station, cathedral, and town, and I had no noise issues. For breakfast, the place next door at Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway is very good and reasonably priced if you want something smart and à la carte. Intermezzo Cafe Bar & Restaurant is good too, better than average by my scoring, though that always depends on your tastes.

We were driving through town and needed somewhere at the last minute. At 8:30 pm, we got the good news that one room was still available. The staff were lovely, and the room was clean, fresh, and had everything we needed.
