The owner was kind, helpful, and fascinating to talk with, and the apartment itself is spacious, comfortable, and full of history. Its location overlooking Menin Gate is hard to match, just a two-minute walk away. This may be the most spectacular place I’ve ever stayed. If you’re making the pilgrimage to Ypres, you owe it to yourself to stay at Menin Gate House.

Ypres has plenty to offer beyond Menin Gate. It’s a city with a wide range of interests, and on Christmas Eve the whole town square looks like a picture postcard. Having such a large central square completely decorated makes it special, instead of just streets all closed in around you. The Last Post remembrance ceremony has continued every evening at 8pm and draws a very large crowd, even during the major refurbishment of Menin Gate over the past few years. We returned in November 2024 for six nights, and our nephew and his wife joined us for three. I still felt utterly privileged to stay in this wonderful, comfortable, well-appointed house, with its history and warmth. We’d also come back for five nights in June 2023, when I wanted to take some Ypres tours in better weather. Menin Gate was then undergoing major stability work to protect its future. We usually visit in November. The owner couldn’t be more charming or helpful. You can see Menin Gate from the bedroom window, and the rooms are incredibly comfortable. I’ve had the opportunity to stay here more than once, and every time has felt like an experience I won’t forget or regret.

A week wasn’t enough to see everything we wanted to, and I hope we can come back. The house is peaceful and full of history and wonderful artifacts, with Menin Gate close by, especially glorious at night. It’s an easy walk into Ypre, with lots to see and do. Ben was a wonderful host. He took us to the memorial service on our first night, which was deeply moving, shared loads of advice, and told us about the home’s history. He’s kind and knowledgeable. Thanks for a wonderful week.

Stunning accommodation with an amazing view of the gate. Ben, the owner and ceremony organiser, even arranged VIP treatment for us at the Last Post.

Our group had both younger and older adults, and we’d recommend staying here. It’s a short walk to Menin Gate, the town square, bars, and restaurants. I’d go again.
