We had plenty of room for two, and the owner answered our questions quickly and was generally helpful. From the central location, it was easy to get to the metro, restaurants and sights. The apartment was acceptably clean, but the sofa and mattress pads smelled musty and a little smoky. After we shut the windows and returned, there was a stale, lingering smoke smell. The bathroom was extremely small, had no shower pan or window, and the shower water drained poorly. A strong sewer odor was also there, though it had disappeared by our departure. The owner insisted this was unusual and thought it might have been related to street water-line work. We paid almost twice the market rate because we booked months in advance, hoping for a dream place to rest for a week, and couldn’t cancel within 30 days of arrival. At the June 2019 ongoing rate of just over $500 a week, we probably would have rated it higher. Don’t overpay for this apartment.

We stayed here for a few weeks, and it really felt like home. The living and dining spaces are roomy enough to have guests over, and the kitchen has what you need. The apartment is well equipped and centrally placed for families, with transit, shops, supermarkets, pharmacies and entertainment nearby. The owners were very kind and available whenever we had a request, which we really appreciated. There’s round-the-clock security by the entrance because of the nearby Turkish embassy/consulate, though we never needed it. The neighbors were lovely and quiet, and just ask you to be the same. A few things kept this from five stars: it’s on the fourth floor with no elevator, though we managed; the bed and mattress in the second bedroom were in really bad shape and need replacing; and sometimes unpleasant smells came up from the shower drain. Blocking it with a towel when it wasn’t being used was an easy fix. When we’re back in Sofia, we’ll look for this apartment again.
