The place was comfortable, clean, and well organized, and the service was good. The payment issue was frustrating: after I paid in U.S. dollars, I was told one bill wouldn't be accepted because a corner was slightly damaged. This is common in Bolivia, where many hotels won't take bolivianos, and those that take dollars may insist the notes be new and spotless. They don't always explain that beforehand, so future guests should bring suitable bills and be ready for this.

The host family were so welcoming. Our room had a heater, and the bed linen was tidy; the shower had a strong flow of hot water. Breakfast was tasty, with fresh fruit, tea, juice, bread, and egg. The main plaza is under 100 meters away, and the bus terminal is a 10-minute walk.

We missed the chance to post on Booking.com before the review period expired, so leaving this here. Hostal Sonia was a fantastic stay. Feliciano and the owner were both welcoming and accommodating. We had a spacious room, comfy beds, a warm shower, good Wi-Fi, and a Smart TV. They even had a little heating on at night, which we appreciated. Great value for the price.

Our room was meant to be 138 BOB, but they tried to charge 280 BOB and said that included a Booking.com commission. When we asked to see proof, they showed the commission was only 3 USD. The manager was rude and claimed it was 100%, which wasn't true. They pushed us to pay in USD even though our booking was in Canadian dollars. Once we agreed, they suddenly said they couldn't give change in USD and tried to make us take Bolivianos instead. They also insisted the rate was 1 USD = 15 BOB and said it was the same everywhere in Bolivia, but we hadn't seen that anywhere. A terrible start to our Bolivian trip. This felt like a tourist scam, with payment manipulation and false commission claims to overcharge us. Do not stay here.
