Pousada Leão do Mar

We were okay overall, though a few things could have been better. The pousada is small, with only a few rooms. Our room was fine, but smelled strongly of damp when we walked in, and the bed was noisy and not a box spring. The Wi-Fi dropped out at times, and after 9 pm you need to keep your key with you because nobody stays at reception. Breakfast was tasty and basic but complete, though they replenished very little. The morning receptionist, who also prepares breakfast, didn't speak any Spanish. She spent the breakfast period on her phone where guests could see, while another man helped her. The receptionist on the afternoon shift was friendlier. We didn't have a bad time, but those details stood out.

The breakfast was mostly okay, though one morning I found an insect in the scrambled eggs. I told a staff member and they replaced them. The staff were attentive, and the same people handled cleaning and breakfast, but the owners seemed not to care much. They also own another pousada, “Yes”, on the same street. I rented two rooms. Both had old, noisy beds with hard spring mattresses, and the towels were stained and of questionable hygiene. The rooms smelled bad and musty, and cleaning wasn't good. One room had frequent cockroach problems. In the one I stayed in, the toilet kept clogging. I asked three times for it to be fixed before they moved me. In the replacement room, the old minibar door wouldn't close properly, and there were insect larvae or bugs coming out of the tiles and stuck to the floor, already dead. It looked like they had fumigated but hadn't cleaned up afterward. The tiny pool was dirty most days, so I never used it. Dead cockroaches sat in the garden near it for days, which also showed how little attention was paid to cleaning. I wouldn't stay here again.

The employee who was tidying the room was very attentive and polite, a 10 for her and a 5 for the pousada. When I arrived at noon, the room hadn't been cleaned and the sheets were dirty, and the minibar wasn't working. I've stayed at simple but perfect pousadas on Ilha Grande before, so this one wasn't what I expected.

The location is very good, and breakfast is simple. On arrival, a young man saw me carrying two big suitcases and walked off without offering to help. It was the first time I'd seen someone at a pousada greet a guest that way.
