Pousada Barra Velha

The location is a real highlight: an amazing, peaceful beach with clear water, lovely sunrise views and a nice place for a walk. The staff, from reception and the bar to the waiters and cleaners, were all friendly and helpful, easily 10/10. The clean pool, comfortable rooms, trees and outdoor breeze made it pleasant to sit outside with a caipirinha. Food was good on average, delicious on some days, and breakfast was awesome. The beach drinks were delicious too, and the service there was outstanding. We had a great stay and I’d recommend the hotel. It’s simple rather than luxurious, but has what you need for a good visit. One issue was litter around the shore and the property. Guests leaving cigarette ends, plastic, lids, napkins and other rubbish is unacceptable, though it isn’t only the hotel’s problem. I still think the hotel could have kept the area cleaner, and signs asking people not to litter around the property might help. On some days the à la carte option was removed and only the buffet was offered, but when I asked, the staff promptly found a way for me to order instead.

We were so glad we came. The place opens straight onto the beach, where you can order drinks and food, and the water is warm and very clear. The food at Pousada Barra Velha was so good we’d have been happy to eat every meal there. The staff were amazing, kind and always ready to help. It’s also close to a few small towns where we found nice crafts and local food. The rooms are cozy and tidy, with everything we needed and a rustic feel, though they aren’t fancy. We had some really restful days here. Beautiful place!

The regional breakfast is included and delicious, especially the homemade tapiocas, fried cheese and omelets. The à la carte menu was also great, and oddly much better than the dinner buffet. The pousada is lovely, with an amazing beach just a few steps from its main pagoda. The boat trip to the natural swimming pool is well worth it, and getting up early for sunrise is too.

The staff are super friendly, and they put on little daily games where guests can win small prizes, like guessing a papaya’s weight or quickly predicting the number count on a bingo card. They do more than you’d expect from a pousada, in my opinion. It’s a great beach inn for couples or groups. The location is beautiful, but you’ll need a car since it’s not near a major town or city center. Maceio Airport is about a little over two hours away by car, which is okay by Brazilian standards, and the drive through local villages is beautiful during the day.
