The bird life here was epic. After a perfect sunrise through our sliding door, we stepped outside and spotted five new species, including a Toucan. My wife is an avid birder, so it was a pretty special start to our honeymoon. We wanted an intimate hideaway, and this place was just right. It’s a Belizean jungle-style eco-resort, with beautiful hillside rooms, a pool, and a restaurant. A lovely multi-acre property, too, with trees and hiking trails. It feels nothing like a chain hotel. Most of the main sights and tours are around 20-70 minutes away, including Caracol, ATM, Xunantonich, Oxmul Coffee Farm, San Ignacio, the Botanical Gardens, and a dozen butterfly farms. It worked well for getting out to explore Cayo. I also recommended it to my best friend for their honeymoon. They aren’t birders, but loved the setting and easy access to adventures. I saw several young families having a great time as well. The room price was quite reasonable for what you get. In rainy season, you’ll need an all-wheel drive vehicle to make it up the hill, but the extra rental cost felt well worth it, and four-wheel drive is useful for Cayo adventures anyway. I’ve now stayed here three times, first around 2014-15, and it was great then. Under the current ownership, it’s even better. Jay and Christine pay attention to the details in a way that makes the place feel truly five-star.

Christine and Jay knew the local restaurants well and gave us great tips for trying Belizean specialties. Every place they recommended turned out to be a gem. We were happy spending most evenings right at the resort, though. The patio was a lovely spot for drinks and dinner, and the menu had plenty of good choices. The stewed chicken with beans and rice was a favourite. Everything the kitchen staff made was outstanding, so it was hard to go wrong. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and cared for while still feeling like jungle. Our room was spotless, and the bed may have been the most comfortable we’ve ever slept in. The main resort and pool areas were fantastic, and with the amazing weather, we were especially glad to have that beautiful pool. Chris and Jay were pleasant and accommodating, always anticipating what we might need. The Gumbo Limbo staff were friendly, skilled, and second to none. We loved our time at Gumbo Limbo Jungle Resort and can’t think of much that could have made the stay better. Thanks for a great visit. We’ll see you again!

The grounds were beautiful, clean, and well kept, and our rooms were up to date. Jay and Christine took care of us far beyond what you’d normally expect from owners. It felt almost like having a private resort. They served dinner whenever we wanted, and the food was very good. The drinks were excellent, too. They also gave us sound advice about local happenings, restaurants, places to visit, and tours. My family and I highly recommend this place.

We had a relaxing, pleasant stay, and the large grounds were nice to walk around. There’s a pool, and their adopted dogs kept us company. We heard there was a stray horse roaming the nearby hills, but didn’t get to see it. The couple running the place were warm and really had everything dialed in. The rainforest setting is beautiful, with plenty of activities and sights nearby. Their guide recommendations for Mayan ruins and places to eat made us very happy with what we experienced. They provided a light breakfast, and dinner was available for a small charge. We had some of the best stewed chicken of our whole trip. We’ll be going back.

We’re here as a family of ten, and Jay and Christine have been wonderful hosts. Since it’s our first time in Belize, we’ve had lots of questions, and they’ve been very helpful and knowledgeable. The villas are very clean, and the food has been delicious. We ended up having all our dinners here, even though that wasn’t our original plan. It’s very centrally located for our excursions. I’d suggest getting an AWD car. We’d definitely stay here again.
