Blue Tang Inn

Daisy’s breakfasts are already missed. The Blue Tang was a wonderful place for our week in San Pedro, with a well-stocked, spacious, very clean room and great amenities. The location is close to everything, and the staff were kind, friendly, and helpful. We went out twice on the Sirena Azul, and Captain George and First Mate Edwin were fantastic. Taking a tour with them is a must. The hotel was perfect for our visit.

Blue Tang Inn is a small local hotel with personal service. The team was fantastic, and they arranged excursions and accommodated us when we asked to make changes. From here we could walk to the town center and plenty of good restaurants. We all had a great time, and would recommend Blue Tang Inn for an easygoing, laid-back Belize vacation.

Our spacious place at the Blue Tang Inn had beach views, a working kitchen, a huge shower, and much appreciated air-conditioning. We stayed three nights on Ambergris Caye. After we checked in with Robert, he signed us up for a sunset cruise on Sirena Azul. Reuben had picked us up Friday and driven us through lively downtown San Pedro to the beach at the end of main street. We could have happily spent time reading on the sun deck and lounging by the pool, but there was too much to do. From the beach entrance we walked to the pier and met Captain George and First Mate Edwin. The cruise was enchanting. We relaxed on the bow in the Caribbean breeze, taking in clear teal water and the island coast as we sailed to a good sunset spot. Edwin brought fresh ceviche and plenty of drinks, and we were dropped back at the hotel pier before walking along the beach to find dinner. The next day we took a half-day snorkeling trip on Sirena Azule. Captain George and Edwin made it fun again. On the way to Hol Cha, Edwin caught some Skipjack. We saw turtles and rays at Hol Cha and swam with nurse sharks, which were drawn in part by the skipjack entrails. On the sail home we had remarkably fresh skipjack Ceviche. In high school I read The Old Man and the Sea, where the main character prepares freshly caught raw fish with saltwater. I’d imagined doing that myself for more than 20 years, and Edwin’s Skipjack Ceviche finally satisfied that craving. The following day we arranged a private birding trip with Edwin. He got a boat and took us through lagoons and mangroves, then out to distant nameless Cayes visited only by traditional fishermen and hundreds of seabirds. The evening sun made the mangroves glow and turned the white birds pink. It was a remarkably personal and rewarding outing. I definitely recommend booking at the Blue Tang and hope I can return soon.

We’ve enjoyed staying at Blue Tang over the years, and the hotel itself is great. Breakfast isn’t much, but you can walk down the beach to find food. This most recent visit was our worst, though the issue was the growth around the hotel rather than the hotel itself. More businesses have brought more locals and tourists, and the late-night noise has risen a lot. We stayed five nights and were woken on three of them by loud music or motorbikes. I know some noise is to be expected, but this was different. Golf carts with big speakers would sit in the street outside our window at 11 pm, 1 am, or 2 am, blasting music until it felt like our bed was in a club. People also sat revving motorbikes over and over, peeling out and coming back, nonstop. I still highly recommend Blue Tang overall. The noise is probably much lower in a room on the south side, away from the street.
