Baddeck is a lovely little town and a handy stop before the Cabot trail, with this place within walking distance. But there are other nice resorts now, and I’d consider one of those. This hotel charges like royalty while the stay feels like trailer trash. Running a dive hotel is one thing, but the price should match what you get, and here it really doesn’t. The staff seem nice enough, though they look overworked and depressed. I can understand how dealing with a long line of unhappy customers could wear you down. The pool reeks of chloramine and body odor. Cracks in the liner and sweaty, peeling wallpaper look like plenty of places for bacteria to hide, so I’d avoid it. The rooms smell like mouse urine, the plumbing is questionable, and the carpets look like a cotton and fungus mix. You might get hot water in the morning if you’re extremely lucky. At least the windows seem to have been upgraded sometime in the last 25 years. Maybe decades ago, around when the first Trudeau was prime minister, this place was the height of luxury. Like an alcoholic rhythm guitarist from an 1980s hair band, it’s really let itself go.

We had drinks at both The Lakeside and The Narrows, and the service was good. The Narrows had live music until 11pm, which we loved. The buffet breakfast had all the basics for a solid meal, including eggs, pancakes, pastries, fruit, yogurt, sausage, bacon, and potatoes. We’d booked a “traditional” room for one night, but switched to the main lodge, where the rooms had been updated. The difference was drastic. Our room was clean and comfortable.

The live music was easily the best part of our day there. We loved our accommodation, the food, and the service too.

The fitness room was closed while we were there, and reception couldn’t explain why. The person I spoke with seemed not to care. Breakfast was very poor, with hardly any choice. Our original room was extremely tired and badly in need of refurbishment. We were moved to a cottage that was a little better, unless you count the slug crawling across the floor and another on the door. It also needed updating. The silicone repairs around the bath were badly done, and water sprayed out of the shower in every direction. Very disappointing.

The dirty coffee machine had clearly been left from the previous guest, and the floor creaked whenever someone walked around. You could also hear a lot of footsteps from upstairs, which was annoying if the other person was asleep. The bed in our main lodge room was awful and left me with back pain. We stayed one night on the way to Cabot Trail. If I can’t sleep somewhere, it’s not worth my time or money.
