My husband and I love hotels with character, and this one was a fun change from the stale, commercial places we usually find. The colorful vintage decor gives every room its own personality, and there are lots of quirky details around the building. You can tell the owner and management put a lot of love into rescuing this building and making it an iconic landmark in this heritage town. We enjoyed chatting with manager Vanessa and her son, who were often nearby and very helpful. Vanessa showed us around, including rooms that still have features from when part of the building served as a jail. You can stay in those rooms as well. We’d love to come back with more family. If you can, call the hotel directly to book. The managers can explain how the building works, talk through the different rooms, and help you choose one that suits your needs and interests.

I’m a fan of hotels with atmosphere and a unique feel, so I really liked staying here. It was very clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. There wasn’t really staff around, so you’re mostly left to yourself. That could be a downside or a plus depending on what you like. There’s no bar either, so bring your favorite wine! :)

This was the worst hotel experience I’ve had, and a complete waste of money. The staff were rude and unprofessional. The website says dogs are welcome, but Vanessa harassed me about my service dog, accused us of her barking, and questioned whether she was a service animal when she is one. She also moved us from an upstairs room to the jail room when we didn’t want to move. The room she put us in was dirty and smelled of mold. In response to the owner: the inn was already damaged when we arrived. We took videos before and after our stay to show we hadn’t damaged anything. Vanessa was the only person working there and was unbelievably rude. Instead of basic help, she spoke to me in an unprofessional tone. As paying guests, we expected better. The accusations about my dog need to stop. The first rooms were dirty, which is why we moved in the first place. The mildew smell was unbearable, and we took pictures of both rooms. Other reviews mention the smell and dirtiness too. Don’t stay here; there are better, more professional places nearby. I’ve now read another rude and unprofessional statement from you, Vanessa. We were not evicted. We have the attending officer’s name and badge number, as well as the incident number, and this false statement could be used in court. We left by choice because the second room smelled disgusting, like fecal matter and mildew. Calling guests “filthy” is completely inappropriate.

The air conditioner didn’t work, and the room became unbearably hot. When we raised the problem with owner Vanessa, she was indifferent and arrogant, with no accountability. She refused even a partial refund and essentially told us to take it or leave it. We were told no other rooms were available unless we waited until the next day and paid extra, despite having been put in a room that should never have been rented. The room smelled strongly of feces and urine as soon as we entered. The carpet was visibly stained, and the mattress and nearby furniture showed clear signs of having been urinated on. Everything felt filthy, neglected, and unfit for guests. The cleanliness, service, and honesty here were appalling. Nobody should have to sleep in those conditions and be treated with such disrespect. Avoid this place.

Vanessa, the manager and hostess, was lovely and attentive, and we enjoyed our stay. The King George is an old, quaint former jailhouse, renovated in an old English style that reminded us of places we’d recently stayed in Britain. It has few amenities and no elevator, so it won’t suit everyone.
