For a budget stay, Granville hall is hard to beat compared with the other options around here. It's perfectly placed between the main parties on Argyle street and the waterfront: head uphill to the bars or downhill to the docks. The Dartmouth ferry is close, too, so you can explore there on foot. At half the price of the cheapest hotel, it was worth it to me. This is a fully self-service residence. Check-in is digital, and you can get your own extra towels and linens. Bathrooms only have hand soap, and with 2 for about 10 rooms per floor, you might have to wait. The rooms are nice, and the third-floor ceiling must be 20' tall, with brick on the outside wall. They're like tiny studio apartments, with a mini fridge, plus shared laundry and kitchens since it's a student residence during the academic year. The walls are fairly thin, so lively conversations next door carry through. It may not suit more than 2 people traveling with lots of luggage. For solo or duo travelers packing light, though, it's a hidden gem: a basic but perfectly capable place to sleep and freshen up while exploring Halifax/Dartmouth in summer.

The location made our five days in Halifax so easy, right downtown and close to everything. My son and I felt safe, and we both slept like babies in the comfortable room. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about sharing bathrooms, but they were clean and simple to use. I’d come back for sure. I gave the room four stars only because it isn’t a five-star hotel room.

The rooms felt new, comfortable, and well equipped, with plenty of towels, private bathrooms, and hot water. Each floor has a kitchen with cooking gear, though there was no salt on mine. I’d have liked some shelves in the bathroom for toiletries, too. One especially handy thing: you can still use the building after checkout, so you can leave your bags or spend time there until you need to go. The location is right in the middle of everything, just a two-minute walk to the art museum and close to one of the best comic book shops I’ve visited in a long time. I usually find good accommodation prices through Airbnb and similar services, but Halifax stumped me. Those listings were extremely expensive during the busy tourist season. Then AI pointed me toward Canadian universities’ summer accommodation, and I found this lovely place at a reasonable rate.

For a short stay, it was worth the affordable price. This is a very basic hostel residence, a little worn, with everything self-service. The location is excellent, easy to get around from and close to the waterfront. I did see a lot of mice in the kitchen and hallway, though, and as a solo female student I felt uneasy that most of the other residents were older men.

It was very quiet while I was there, and the value is good. The place is spotless, well kept, and has simple rooms with what you need for a short stay. There are lots of shared seating areas and a fully equipped kitchen on every floor. Bathrooms are shared, but there are several per floor, and I never had to wait. Keep in mind this is privately managed, not a hotel. If you book through Expedia or another platform, you have to complete extra online check-in steps, which is the only way to check in. The process itself is straightforward. There are three floors and no elevator. You can access the building, but not your room, from 9am on arrival day until 9pm on departure day, including the bathrooms and shared spaces. Food, attractions, and shops are all within a block and easy to reach on foot. There’s no free coffee, water, or other supplies, so bring your own. A vending machine is there, but the selection is limited and it wasn’t working for me. There’s no staff on site apart from the cleaning crew, who don’t speak English.
