We got in extremely late, early the next day really, and had to ring a bell to get inside. There was a wait for someone to answer. The mobile key worked before the front desk staff, who wanted our name before letting us in. Not ideal when you’re exhausted, especially since I’d messaged about our arrival time. The rooms are generous, with a sitting area and kitchen. The shower was clean with good pressure, the towels were fluffy, and the bed was pretty comfortable. Street parking is free on weekends, since the parkade was full. Mornings were kind of loud with doors and people, though it’s hard to blame the hotel when we were trying to catch up on sleep after 8am. My rating reflects what I expect from a 3 star hotel.

The noise made it impossible to relax. People yelled outside, and loud music carried through the paper-thin walls late into the night. The gym could have been a redeeming feature, but it reeked of a musky, foul odor, likely because the whole room was carpeted. It felt less like a fitness space and more like an olfactory assault. Ants crawling over the hand towels greeted me when I entered the room. At the front desk, the response was, “Housekeeping will come with ant spray tomorrow.” Spending the night with insects was apparently meant to be reasonable, but housekeeping never came. The shower drain was completely clogged, leaving me standing in ankle-deep stagnant water, a small swamp where a basic amenity should have been. I rarely write negative reviews, but this stay was so badly mismanaged I feel irresponsible not warning people. Between the infestation, the disrepair, and staff showing no concern, this was the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had, without exaggeration. Stay elsewhere.

The only downside was some noise. Otherwise, I had a great stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Halifax. Suraj at the front desk was incredibly friendly and professional, and made sure we were comfortable in Room 502. His service was exceptional. Thank you, Suraj!

The bar across the street played music so loudly that at 20:45 we had to call the office and ask to be moved. Later, at 22:45, I asked the hotel to move us and was told to call in the morning. That sums it up. The place has seen better days. There was often no one at the front desk, and people from the street could get into the unsecured elevator. Things were falling off the walls, exposing the old paint color underneath. The gym was dated and dingy. Probably my worst hotel stay in many years. Boy oh boy.

The room was a highlight: spacious, bright, and thoughtfully set up with lots of outlets and USB ports. The in-room kitchen had utensils, there was tea and coffee in the lobby all the time, and reception offered helpful luggage storage. Breakfast was quite good too. The hotel was conveniently next door to my conference venue in Halifax, where I stayed for two nights in September 2025. I gave four stars because a few things could be better. There was a faint smell in the bathroom that wasn’t addressed, and pub noise across the street on Thursday night made it somewhat hard to fall asleep. The room had no safe or tea kettle, the juice machine at breakfast wasn’t working, and the vent didn’t direct airflow well toward the bed. Fixing those details would make the stay even better.
