Coast Bastion Hotel

At checkout the next morning, I realized I’d left a brand new sweatshirt in the room. The hotel maid took the time to bring it to me, and everyone I met was gracious and honest. It’s not often you find people with those qualities anymore. Thank you for restoring my faith in human nature. After taking the Hullo ferry, I simply caught the courtesy shuttle and was dropped off a block and a half from the hotel. The front desk staff were extremely kind, friendly, and respectful when I had an issue with my credit card. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

We’ve stayed at Coast Bastion countless times when visiting our grandparents in Nanaimo, including before the renovation. The updates have made the hotel much more comfortable and enjoyable. The rooms are clean, the beds are incredibly comfortable, and the design is more modern now. Our first time there with our newborns was over the Christmas break, in room 802, which is now our favorite. The layout worked really well. Near the entrance, a tucked-away desk area gave us space for our double stroller and a million other baby things, keeping the main area from feeling crowded. We had excellent views of both Front Street and Bastion Street. The sheets were smooth and comfortable. I’d guess they’re sateen weave, but could someone confirm? As a warm sleeper, I liked them, and the duvet still felt cozy without being too warm. There were four pillow types, from soft to firm, so we could pick what suited our preference and mood. Even the newborns seemed to enjoy the bed, since they slept longer during our stay. I also appreciated housekeeping keeping the room clean, especially with all the poopy diapers.

The harbour view was superb, looking out over a calm and charming port. The decor, carpets, and paint had all been updated and were very clean. The restaurant was excellent, with kind staff, quick service, and great food. Hotel staff were also kind and ready to help or answer questions. The room windows were very dirty, and the balcony doors could have used a cleaning too. Winter is a challenging time for that.

The views and location are hard to beat anywhere else in the city. Our room was spacious and nicely renovated, and the staff were all friendly, always smiling, and a pleasure to deal with. Having EV charging in the parkade was a big plus, and the ferry terminal is less than 10 minutes away.
