Hôtel du Fjord

The room was large, well designed, and had air conditioning. The location was very good, and breakfast was ample. Staff were polite and attentive, especially Sasha at breakfast. The poker room downstairs was a downside, and the air conditioning couldn't be adjusted. Special thanks to Mme Desgagnes, who helped me and mailed an item I'd left behind.

We loved this place. The staff were kind and helpful, and the breakfast was much better than some reviews suggest. It meets Canadian standards, with toast, butter, cheese, hard eggs, jam, joghurt, fresh fruit, cereals, and really good coffee. The only thing missing was an indoor pool where you could relax after a day hike.

I stayed one night, and it was a waste of money. The room was cold, and the receptionist controlled the heating. They said October isn't winter, so they don't turn it on. At 4:00am I asked them to switch it on and waited until 6:30, but the heat still didn't come. They were micromanaging their services. I went down to my car and tried to sleep using its heater. I felt like a hostage in a refugee camp. That's unfortunate.

The staff were so courteous, and the rooms were quiet, basic but pleasant, with what we needed. The fridge being in the washroom was a little odd. The building feels old, though, and the pub downstairs means you notice smoke and alcohol as soon as you come in. It draws a pretty typical downtown crowd, which may not suit families. I wouldn't leave valuables in the car in the parking lot. Still, the staff go out of their way to make you comfortable.
