Joe welcomed us by asking what we thought of the place, then called it the worst dump he'd ever stayed in. When we asked if it was his first visit, he said he'd been coming for fifty years. He'd even gotten married in the common area a few years ago. That story gave our stay a lighthearted start. The river below is breathtaking, though getting there means tackling a steep hill. The place clearly had its heyday in another era and could use some TLC. It was fun imagining how cool it must have been back then. Our doors had no windows, and some windows had no screens. A chipmunk got lucky with some peanut and Chex mix in the kitchen, and the five year old had ice cream for breakfast on our last day. This is a budget friendly, clean spot with few crowds, but people looking for luxury or high end amenities should look elsewhere. The beds are adequately comfortable, and bath products are complimentary. There's an extra restroom accessed from outside, even though the official listing says there's just one bathroom.
The area is lovely to visit, but I can't recommend renting until the cottages are renovated. The Main House has lots of beds and a large outdoor area, though construction is underway and I tripped on an extension cord outside. The front and side door screens were hanging, and one lock wasn't secure. Screening was missing in places, and most windows have holes or need replacing. Wasps and hornets get into the kitchen through the current windows. The bathroom and kitchen taps and pipes leak profusely. At the current rental rate, it's definitely not worth it.
The cottage is in Southampton, right on the Saugeen River shore, and has two bedrooms that sleep five, free parking, cable TV, and a newer, maintained BBQ outside. Self check-in sounded convenient, but the lockbox code they gave us was wrong. We spent an hour on the phone with assistance figuring out what to do because the on-site manager was away for the long weekend, leaving the property unattended. Inside, the kitchen had an old manual timer oven and coil stove. Cutlery was incomplete, and one glass was cracked when we arrived, so we had to go to the nearest store for essentials. The couch was dirty and smelled bad. One room had broken windows, and when we came back the next day, there was a rat inside. Wilderness is understandable, but those living conditions weren't hygienic. The outside seating hadn't been cleaned in months, with dead mosquitoes and other insects on the chairs and table. There's no air conditioning. Wi-Fi connected to the login but never provided internet. We had to rush to a store for basic supplies because none were provided.
Edit: We returned for a week this summer, but the pool was closed and the fishing boat rental shown on the Website wasn't available. Those were the two amenities we'd chosen the place for. There was a new owner, and prices will double. Janice the caretaker was very nice. I've changed my rating because of all that. The cottage was very clean and the owners were really nice. I was sure we'd go back.
We always liked coming here over the years, even though it was never the Taj Mahal. The new owners and fees have made it unaffordable. That's what happens when a place turns corporate, I guess. Too bad. There are better options for the price now.
