Basinview Motel

We had a great view, and Digby's delicious restaurants were only about 10 minutes away. This was the best motel we stayed at during our two-week road trip to the Maritimes. The hosts were lovely and friendly, and our good-sized unit had two rooms, one double bed and two singles, connected by a bathroom.

The owners were really pleasant, and the motel was kept in very good shape. It may be older and not modern, but it didn't have that cheap, unkempt look I often expect from an older motel. I'd definitely stay again.

I booked a room online here for two employees who were working in the area. I hadn't been to the motel before and didn't know its rules or hours. Some other places I'd checked online showed as closed in the booking options, but this one didn't, so I assumed it was open 24 hours. I was wrong. My employees had worked all night and reached the property shortly after 5 a.m., but it was dark. I called the hotel number, apologized for the early call, and explained that two guys were in the parking lot trying to get into their rooms. The female owner said I was ridiculous for arriving at that hour and that her husband had waited until 2 a.m. for us. I apologized again and explained that I'd included my number with the online booking, and that if they'd called, I could have told them when to expect us. She replied, and I quote, "are you stupid or something you should have called to see if this was ok when i booked". The same sort of behavior carried on. She threatened to charge my credit card double if letting us in woke the other guests, and complained that our " monster truck " was too loud. It was actually a diesel cube van. Her husband took the phone and acted the same way. In the end, they turned us away, and my employees had to sleep in the truck on the side of the road. I'm embarrassed that tourists might take this as a sign of how Nova Scotians behave. This is the worst experience I've ever had with a company. I'd give it no stars, but the site required me to select one. I promised the owner I'd include all the details in my review, so here they are.

I don't usually choose motels, but I'd stay at this one again. It's a cute little place, very clean and well looked after. The owners are also the caretakers, and they're pleasant and accommodating.
