Modern Motel

The sheets were clean and the mattress was very soft, but cigarette smoke kept coming into the room. Staff were rude and said there was nothing they could do, since it might be coming through the window AC unit. I rolled a towel to block the gaps at the bottom of the door and window, but it barely helped. It’s hard to call it a non-smoking room when smoke comes in from outside. The shower caulking was gross and dirty, and there were stains on the carpet. The headache meant I barely slept. I should’ve slept in the car.

We booked online at the modern motel, but when we arrived, the owner said they were overbooked and sent us to a second place down the road. That place was a dump, nothing like the modern hotel advertised online. The rooms were dark and grimy, a Bible was propping up a broken bed frame leg, and the walls were paper thin. Our neighbors didn’t sleep. Parking was awful, if you could even find a spot, and only one outdated power bar worked as an outlet. The four-digit room code didn’t work either. We were definitely tricked into staying there.

The man running the place was really friendly, and I’m glad they had vacancies when my girlfriend and I needed somewhere in a pinch. Compared with nearby places and our other experiences, Modern Motel was okay, though I wish the rooms were more updated, cleaner, and more welcoming. We’d already paid before spotting an earwig under the blanket. I checked beneath all four layers of sheets in room 1. There were no other stains or bugs, just the one on the top layer, so I can’t really blame them. The washroom was clean enough, but it could use repairs to feel reassuring. You go in there to feel clean, and I didn’t. We paid next to nothing, and I hate leaving bad reviews for small businesses.

The room was affordable and the AC worked, which mattered since we were right by the Trans-Canada Highway. The beds were firm but comfortable, and the sheets were clean and new. The carpet had just been cleaned too. The place is old, musty, and dated, but the service was very good and parking is free with video monitoring. I’d stay again. The room locks felt flimsy, though, and a hard shove or shoulder check might open them. The owner should upgrade those.
