Gîte du Passant Maison Wickenden

I rarely stay at hotels and usually choose guesthouses, so I was especially disappointed here. It was clean and close to everything, but I don't understand the five-star rating after this stay. The breakfast was very basic and such a small portion that the men were still hungry. The time slot was just 8 to 9 am, and asking for coffee after 9 wasn't an option because they said it was lunchtime. At the other guesthouses I've visited, breakfast usually lasts two hours, such as 8 to 10. Parking was another problem. There wasn't enough, and street parking was prohibited, so we had to leave the car much farther away. I assume that's because the owner has a city parking permit during tourist season. Our room also had no blackout curtains, so the streetlights bothered us. For the price, it felt like very little had been invested. I've stayed at several four-star guesthouses that were much better. I didn't bring my phone to breakfast, or I would have taken a photo. I was shocked by how little food there was and by its mediocre quality. I wasn't expecting haute cuisine, just a basic standard.

The owners were so welcoming, and breakfast was excellent. We had a wonderful night at this Gîte and would gladly return.

We'd happily recommend this place. They gave us a very warm welcome, and breakfast came with a baguette and fresh fruit.

Everything was within walking distance. Our room was lovely and very clean, and the host was charming. Recommended.
