The staff were really friendly, and it was quiet in and around the hotel during our stay. Our room was clean, but very dated, which helps explain why it's cheaper than other nearby hotels. If saving money or being on a work trip is the priority, you'll get by here. For a romantic getaway, I'd pick somewhere else. I still recommend the Gouverneur if all you need is a place to crash.

It's very convenient to be so close to downtown, and our room was clean with a comfortable bed. But there was no night light in the bathroom, and it was so dark that I nearly fell while looking for the switch. The door also didn't close properly, so we had to check it each time. We left the room cleaning sign on the door, but housekeeping never cleaned it. When we told reception, they didn't seem to care, basically acting like, so what? There was no apology or offer of compensation. Parking was frustrating too: just one accessible space for a hotel this size, and the driveway was always full of parked cars. Our floor was also the only one without an ice machine. We were told there should be one on the third floor, but there wasn't.

The only things I liked were the location and the nice basement parking. The hotel is very old, although both elevators worked. There's no free breakfast, and the gym and pool were closed. The restaurant was very expensive, and there wasn't a microwave in the room. The mini fridge didn't work properly, and housekeeping left us far too little milk and tea. The toilet wouldn't flush right and the bathroom was clogged. The list goes on. The room carpet was so dirty we were afraid to touch it. Usually hotels leave at least two free bottles of water a day, but here there was nothing.

The second room had a bath drain that didn't work, so the water overflowed when we showered. The carpets were dirty and covered with suspicious stains, and we didn't dare walk on the floor without shoes or socks. The smell throughout the hotel was strange and unclean, and even the hallway carpets looked like they hadn't been vacuumed. There was dust in the halls too. The decor needs refreshing. Even replacing the wallpaper would help, since it looked ready to peel off. Our first room wasn't clean either. The toilet was full and wouldn't flush, and the beds looked like someone had just sat on them. For $200 a night, we got an ugly, dirty room. To this day, it's one of the worst hotels I've stayed at.
