After two great months at Ocean Island Inn, I came away with a strong impression of the staff and the social atmosphere. The front desk team were welcoming, friendly, and helpful at any hour, and it was easy to meet people and feel the hostel's family-like vibe. I'd recommend it to travelers who want that kind of community and a chance to connect. There are plenty of practical perks too: affordable room rates, at least in the off-season, a well-equipped kitchen, enough washers and dryers, and the hostel's own parking lot. It stayed warm, the showers were hot with good pressure, and there were comfortable armchairs. Breakfast was good and inexpensive, while dinner was even better. The bar also had a different drink special each day, and bingo and trivia ran twice a week. Thanks, Doug! The downsides were mostly about noise and the surrounding area. Thin walls and weak insulation meant rooms could be loud. If you're facing the street, free earplugs from the front desk may come in handy: people often shouted outside late at night, and cars revved loudly when the intersection light turned green. Homeless people and people struggling with addiction were often on the street, and sometimes came into the parking lot and left litter. My scores: rooms 3/5, service 5/5, location 4/5. I had a great stay overall.

The staff were helpful and friendly, and I appreciated being moved from a dorm into a private room. For a backpacker hostel, the basic facilities were adequate. Breakfast was just toast and spreads, but that seemed fair for the price. My biggest concern was the bedding. It didn't look freshly cleaned, and I found several hairs from previous guests on the sheets. There was mold on the windows, and the insulation was so poor that street noise and rain came through as if the window were open. I had a very itchy, restless night. I initially wondered about bed bugs, but it seemed more like an allergic reaction to dust mites or the bed's skin cell salad. I can't say what caused it. The area also has visible homelessness and drug activity, which visitors should know about. The staff do their best to offer a budget stay, but clean bedding matters most in a hostel. I hope they improve that. The place is due for renovation, and the facilities need work.

I've stayed here several times and met some of the best people. Breakfast and dinner come with the stay, and beer lovers even get a little beer for free. The staff are the best part. Jane is a sweetheart who always has a smile, and Nazeem and Maya are lovely, happy to help, and 10/10. Yannick has loads of energy and charm, even with me being a loud British man. He's the best bartender within a 10 mile radius. You'll have a great time here. Cheers 🍻

Faren was a bloody awesome human. She suggested some cool places to eat and helped me through the whirlwind of settling in bc Canada, including room setup and other suggestions. I really appreciated her kindness and help, and can't recommend her enough. The hostel has the best rate I've found for a central downtown spot. My single room was incredibly affordable, and having communal breakfast and dinner included was a huge help on a tight budget. The staff were accommodating and helpful throughout my stay. Highly recommend it if you're coming to Victoria, from someone who works in hospo! ☺️

Everything was within easy walking distance, and the major bus stops were just around the corner, which made the central location really convenient. Staff were lovely, especially the front desk team, who were helpful and accommodating. Extending my stay was seamless. The rooms and shared areas were clean. I didn't try the included breakfast or dinners, but they looked like a full spread and seemed to go quickly. I'd highly recommend this place for a Victoria visit and will definitely come back. Thanks for a great stay 🌺
