Our seven-day Vancouver Island trip ran from April 7-13, with time in Victoria and Sooke. In Victoria, we visited the Inner Harbour, Beacon Hill Park, Clover Point and Chinatown, and had dinner at a restaurant in James Bay. We spent two nights at Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub & Guesthouse. The building is more than a century old, with its original architectural details preserved and lovely vintage furnishings. Pink camellias were blooming in the garden, and we were greeted with beer and chocolates. About a 45-minute drive from Victoria on the way to Sooke, we stopped at Hatley Castle and its Italian and Japanese gardens. They blended so nicely into the natural surroundings, and the visit was truly relaxing. In Sooke, we stayed four nights at Prestige Oceanfront Resort. Our room was spacious and elegant, set up to make the most of the breathtaking ocean views. Sitting and watching the water was calming, and the peaceful setting made the stay very relaxing. The resort was beautiful, with lovely ocean scenery, quiet walking paths and fresh coastal air. The sunrises and sunsets were especially striking and stayed with us. We also took in Whiffin Spit, the Sooke Marine Boardwalk and Sheringham Point Lighthouse, enjoying the natural beauty throughout the trip.

Spinnakers is probably the most okay pub you'll ever go to. The beer comes ice cold, but it's just fine. Our server was fairly friendly, though clearly not happy to be there. The food was alright, but a burger here really shouldn't cost $26. I used to love this place. Now it feels like a tourist trap.

New review: Spinnakers gets called inconsistent a lot, and I just experienced that in a big way. I had dinner with my family and ordered the Bacon Jam and Brie Burger. The bacon jam and Brie were excellent, but the patty was dry and the bun was awful, somehow both underbaked and dried out. It stuck to parts of my mouth so badly I couldn't taste anything else. One of the worst burgers on the island, and $28 for it is outrageous. They really need to rethink their burgers. I've changed my old five-star rating to two. Old review: I came with a large group for lunch. Service was great and fast, and the food came out nearly all at once. Everyone enjoyed their meal. My BLT was perfectly made. I hadn't had one in ages and had forgotten how much I love them, but this reminded me. Honestly, I've never had a bad lunch at Spinnakers.

Family The clam chowder is rich and comforting, and right from the first spoonful the seafood tastes genuinely fresh. You can tell it's made with care. I also loved the house-made drinks. The ginger ale was bright, bold and nicely balanced, and it's special that they make their own root beer and other beverages too. They pay real attention to both the food and drinks. I love the clam chowder, rum cheesecake, pizza and French fries. It all satisfied my heart. One of my favorite dine-in experiences, and I'd happily come back.

For our honeymoon, we spent four nights at Spinnakers Guest House in early October. It's a remarkable historic building, full of charm, with century-old architecture, original details and beautiful vintage furnishings. The craftsmanship is amazing, and there are little surprises everywhere you look. The yard was still vibrant and lovely, and there's parking at the back on a very quiet street. The guesthouse is just a two-minute walk from Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub, another historic building with a stunning view of Lime Bay. A scenic path starts right outside the pub and goes around the bay. We had breakfast and dinner there, and both meals were outstanding. Guests at the house get a voucher for beer and chocolates, which we enjoyed a lot. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, and we'd definitely stay again. The overall experience was excellent, thank you for a wonderful visit, 10/10. The room was small and didn't have a fridge or microwave. It was easier to take a bath than a shower, though there was a fairly large TV. If you're looking for all the modern amenities, this might not be the place for you.
