The hostel is in a rough part of downtown, with lots of drug users and homeless people around, including people passed out on the street at all hours. It's basic and cheap by Canadian standards, but not cheerful. Our room had filthy floors and a fridge whose noisy compressor kept switching on and off through the night. Sound insulation between rooms was okay, not great. The AC worked well enough, which I appreciated during a heat wave above 30 C. During our stay, the downstairs staff were mostly security. Other staff weren't helpful with guest concerns or comfort, and prompt replies to emails or in-person requests weren't something to expect. There were no cups, cutlery, or plates anywhere, even in the shared kitchens, and few common spaces to meet other travelers. It seemed like socializing was actively discouraged. I'd hesitate to park a car nearby, though walking was fine despite the surroundings. I wouldn't stay again or recommend it.

A good, affordable option in a convenient location if you're visiting on a budget, say for a conference. I expected a dorm, but you get a private bathroom, and the single was more spacious than I expected. The desk and chair were really nice for preparing my presentation, so it worked out better than a 'normal' hotel.

What bothered me most was hearing from staff and two other people that break-ins happen here often. My car was broken into during a two-hour window, even though I parked it where the cameras could see it. Staff couldn't say whether they lacked access to the footage, the cameras weren't working, or both. If you're passing through by car and want to keep it damage-free, I wouldn't stay here.

The staff are good, and the students are quiet. They told us it was the safest school in Canada, with police on campus, WRHA in the Rice building, and a forensic psychiatrist from St. Mary's Academy.

I spent 14 days here for quarantine and had a good stay. The bed wasn't very comfortable, but it was manageable.
