Hotel Royal

We really appreciated that the staff stored our luggage after our early checkout. The checkout itself was quick: they refunded the CHF 400 deposit, deducted any outstanding charges, and returned the balance without a problem. We also got a complimentary transport card, which let us use Geneva’s public transport free during our stay and saved money getting around. The hotel is spacious and generally well maintained. Our room was roomy and equipped with a microwave, which came in handy for ready meals in an expensive country. The bathroom was a good size and had complimentary amenities. I’d requested twin beds, and the hotel accommodated that. A friendly receptionist welcomed us and explained everything clearly. I hadn’t understood why there was a CHF 400 deposit for four nights after I’d already prepaid, but the receptionist explained it covered extras such as restaurant meals and other services, and would be refunded if unused. It’s useful to know about beforehand. The hotel’s location was convenient, a 7-10 minute walk from Geneva Train Station. We didn’t use the spa, and the gym was disappointing: small and very warm, with only one of its two fans working, an empty water dispenser, and just heavier dumbbells. It seemed not to have been checked recently, with basic supplies missing. One afternoon, a swarm of wasps flew around outside and kept hitting our window. There seemed to be a nest there, and we worried they might get into the room.

The location was perfect, but the amenities were disappointing. Our triple executive room looked dated and needed attention, with worn paintwork and cracked bathroom tiles. There were three of us but only two towels. The room had peppermint tea, and when I asked reception for English breakfast tea bags, they charged 7 francs for four. Breakfast was very average, just a standard continental spread with some eggs, bacon, and beans. It wasn’t worth paying extra for. The reception staff weren’t very attentive, though the bar staff were much more pleasant and welcoming. I’d give it 3/5.

We had a great stay and can’t wait to return. The hotel is clean and beautifully decorated, and the staff are friendly and kind. It’s an easy place to find your way around and a really handy base, right opposite a tram stop, a few minutes on foot from the train station and just as close to the lakeside. Our stay included a travel card that made all public transport free the whole time.

The rooms are clean, the location is excellent, and the price feels worthwhile. The hotel crew are respectful and helpful. Amin, Waddah, and Philip are great people, and I’d recommend dealing with them.
