We needed a room for one night at the last minute after our itinerary changed. Since it was the same day, we messaged to check the booking had gone through and were told the room was definitely available, so we headed to the hostal. A dismissive woman there said they had no rooms. We showed her the messages confirming our booking, but she still turned us away, just pointing at post-it notes and gesturing no. Nobody acknowledged the inconvenience or apologized. Then they asked us to cancel through booking.com instead of handling it themselves. We found another hotel, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise, since del ray didn’t look particularly clean or nice.

We liked it so much that we added three days to our stay. Hostal del Rey feels like a warm, cozy family home, and the hosts were incredibly sweet. They speak Spanish, but will use Google Translate for what you need and take care of you like family. It’s also in a great spot, with the city centre a five-minute walk away and everything else within walking distance. The rooms are small, but that wasn’t an issue. They feel lived-in and warm, have plenty of blankets for winter, and the beds are comfortable. Our ensuite worked well, with hot water and a good shower. The extra help was great too. Laundry cost 7 euros a bag, and they kept our luggage for half a day before our airport trip. We arrived in the middle of the night because of travel problems, and they didn’t mind at all. We got some rest and checked in in the morning. I definitely recommend this place if you want a cozy, family-style house.

The best thing is the location, about a 10-minute walk to the plaza and major attractions. The bed was comfortable, with a plug at its end, and I liked the little bedside shelf and the bathroom shelving. The shower had good hot water, the WiFi worked well for uploads, and I could pay by card. The male proprietor was friendly. Breakfast was basic white bread with butter and jam, so I skipped it, though you can make a limited breakfast in the kitchen. I was concerned about noise because my room was beside the kitchen and check-in area, with no soundproofing, but it was quiet at night and in the morning, except when someone woke me around 12:45 AM talking loudly on the phone in the hall. The woman proprietor was sour and acted as if checking me in was a chore. The room was chilly and I couldn’t turn on the heat, though the heavy blankets were enough to sleep comfortably. You have to ask for a towel, which seemed odd, and there’s no bath mat.

The location is very good, which is why I gave it 2 out of 5 stars, but I wouldn’t recommend the place. The water wasn’t hot, making a shower a real challenge when it was around 10°C outside. The room didn’t feel very clean or comfortable, and the ceiling in both the room and kitchen was covered with paper and plastic. It really was like that, as the photo shows. Breakfast quality could also be better compared with other hostels.

A very family-oriented hostel, and it was very clean. The host speaks Spanish, but you can communicate using translation. Taxi service was available too!
