Hostal Villa Paulina

We went in winter and found the room warm and very clean, with a spotless bathroom. Breakfast was generous and delicious, with fresh pastries. Doña Paulina is a lovely host, and the rate was very reasonable. Anyone saying otherwise hasn’t stayed in a hostel or hotel. It’s on a very quiet street, close to the center.

The mattress was really uncomfortable, and breakfast was very limited. The building was damaged in the last earthquake, and the big beds take up too much room. Still, the lounge has soothing, comfortable decor and furnishings; breakfast cake is delicious and homemade. There’s a large, clean pool, though its setting isn’t great, plus private gated parking. The location is good, just a five-minute walk from the center.

After a four-hour drive, arriving here in Valdivia left us with a bad taste. The owner was a careless, very poor hostess, and I never understood what the high price was for. The house is in terrible shape and urgently needs renovation. The rooms have poor ventilation, windows that don’t fit properly or close, and even the bedroom’s front door lets street noise through. The bathrooms have no windows, and there’s a sewage smell coming from the room. It also smells musty, the carpets aren’t vacuumed, and the furniture is dusty. Nothing positive to report. The price should match the charming condition of the place. I definitely wouldn’t come back.

Right in the center and close to all the main attractions, this is a beautiful, welcoming place where it feels like time stopped in the 1960s. The staff are lovely, the bed cozy and very comfortable, and breakfast is just right to start the day. Despite the age of the place, it’s incredibly clean and tidy. I’m allergic to dust and humidity and had no problems at all. Highly recommended, 100%.
