Rai Lei Hostel

The location was fantastic, right beside Mongkok MTR station. The room was okay, though there were marks on the wall and sometimes a smell from the toilet, which we suspect came from the ventilator. There was no kettle or bottled water, so we had to buy bottled water every day. A satisfactory hotel overall.

The reception was hard to deal with because they didn’t understand English. Still, the location is very accessible, along Nathan Road and surrounded by shopping malls. There’s a bus stop right outside, and you can go anywhere in Hong Kong from there. If you like shopping, it’s easy to walk straight into the malls nearby. Overall, I’d recommend it.

We stayed at Rai lei over Christmas in 2019, with four adults, one child, and one elderly person. We booked a family room for six, and it was clean and very good. The sheets were clean, each bed had a blanket, and there was a toilet in the room with automatic hot and cold water. Free hot and cold drinking water was available outside the room. There was no electric kettle or refrigerator, but that wasn’t a problem. You can ask reception for hot water, and the woman there was very nice and tried to understand what we wanted even though she didn’t speak English. Getting there from the airport was easy on bus 21. Get off at Nathan Rd bus stop 7 or 8. Both are fine since Rai lei is between them, though stop 8 is a little easier, opposite Grand plaza mongkok. One thing to know is that the entrance has about 20 steps up to the second floor, and you have to carry your own bags. Then there’s a small elevator to the fourth floor and reception. After that, you carry your bags again to the room on the fifth floor. It was no big deal for our family, and the place was very convenient for walking to Mongkok market, lots of restaurants, and the MTR.

The room smelled sickening, and we all had to squeeze into one room. There was no drinking water, the TVs didn’t work, and there was only one towel. The beds had hair, dirt, and other specks of s**t all over them. On the bathroom’s frosted glass, half-washed vomit was still there, and there was mound all through the shower faucet. There were no amenities like toothbrushes, shower caps, or razors. The photos were extremely deceiving. When we arrived, the elevator wasn’t working, so we had to walk up four flights of stairs. I can’t believe Qantas and TripAdvisor advertise this hotel. It’s the most distrusting and horrid hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Sickening, definitely don’t recommend it for anyone coming to Mong Kok, Hong Kong.
