Sydney Hostel

I spent two weeks here and felt at home. The room was small, but clean and comfortable. Everyone was friendly and helpful, including the Manager, Ash; the Receptionist guy with the turban; and the Cleaning Service, Mbak Fia, Bella, Mbak Siska and Mohit. It's a great option for a visit to Hong Kong. Thanks for your hospitality, Ash.

The receptionist was kind and made things work even though we got there around 1 am, and housekeeping brought fresh towels every day. The rooms are cheap, but really small, and there's nowhere to store luggage, so we tucked ours under the beds. The coffee is free. Noise from other guests carries if they get loud. The bed and pillows are hard, and the blanket is thin. The aircon can make the room SUPER COLD, especially at night, so you may want to switch it off once the room has cooled down. We had no trouble with the ground floor despite the place being inside the chungking mansion. I probably wouldn't recommend Chungking Mansion for families with children or senior citizens.

The room's cramped, but you're close to loads of great food and a good location.

I was exhausted and arrived late, so I managed only a few minutes of sleep before leaving at 7 am without even showering. The room at Sydney Hostel in Chungking Mansions was tiny and smelled strongly of black mould. Even with a mask on and a blanket over me, I couldn't stand the damp smell, and my lungs hurt. Luckily, I stayed only one night and booked a room at Apple Hostel in the same building as soon as I checked out. The setup worried me too. Our floor had several sections with multiple rooms in each, and everyone shared one elevator. It was painfully slow, and when it was full I had to wait several minutes to get out for some fresh air. I was scared that if there were a fire on our floor, we would all be trapped. There was garbage in the hallway by the elevator, and the route to reception on another floor was dirty and gross, with water and soaked cardboard I had to tiptoe around. At reception, the person was cold and condescending and seemed to hate the job. If you value your life and want to sleep without hurting your lungs, DO NOT BOOK HERE.
