The owner is so kind and makes you feel at home. It’s like staying in a mountain hut surrounded by cloud forest, with hummingbirds everywhere along with plenty of other birds and animals. We even saw a Quetzal! There are marked hiking trails for exploring nature. Breakfast is typical Costa Rican and really good. It’s at quite a high elevation, so remember long sleeves and pants for the evenings and nights. There are lots of blankets, too, and the showers are hot.

After the hike, our host served us a lovely lunch. She and her husband (?) were so friendly and cheerful, and we really appreciated their hospitality. The walk itself was wonderful too, with lots of birds and the high altitude rainforest. Just a heads-up, an electricity mast route crosses this private park, and parts can get muddy. For the little waterfall, be ready to get your feet wet :)

Bedrich was especially helpful when we needed advice about taking the bus to San Jose, and the staff were all wonderful. The trails are well marked and easy to follow, and we had a great time by the fireplace meeting other guests. Coming up from the tropical lowlands to 9000 feet was quite a shock, but this is a lovely place with lovely people.

The common room has a lovely outdoor area where you can sit and take in the spectacular views. From this hostel at 2800m, the mountains and clouds make an amazing backdrop. The owners have spent over 20 years building their own nature trails, which guests can use for free right beside the national park. The owner is kind and happy to point you toward hiking options. Such an interesting spot way up high.

The lodge has a relaxed feel and a beautiful view, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We had excellent meals before and after exploring the property. There’s easily enough hiking here to fill a day, with giant trees and rich biodiversity along the well-kept trails. The map they provide is clear, though bring a hiking stick and expect some steep sections. It’s easy to reach from the highway.
