The location worked well for us: the tram stop and shops are fairly close, and it’s easy to get into the city center. We stayed for two nights with fellow students while in Brno. It was cheap, and the hostel staff were friendly, though their English was very basic. The place felt like a museum of communism, with classic Soviet interiors and design. In a room with three beds there was just one power socket, so charging three phones was a problem. The kitchen area was tiny and had almost no equipment, just a sink, some tables, and a two-ring hob. There was only one women’s bathroom with a toilet for the whole floor. Somehow, we managed. The beds were quite hard but comfortable, with no squeaky or sticking-out springs. Free Wi-Fi only worked on the ground floor. Bring a socket splitter and dishes or utensils if you want to make tea or food.

The old town is a 35-minute walk away. Our breakfast was only bread, butter, jam, and coffee or tea. If you’re after a Soviet Union feel, this place has it, since everything in the room seems old enough to be from a museum. The beds might be the exception.

The price was good and breakfast was okay, but there were several problems. The restaurant was closed, and its hours seemed to change randomly: once it was shut at 10:30 pm, another time at 9 pm. Nobody spoke English, and the shower water was still cold at 7 in the morning.

The rooms were more or less okay, and the low price earns it one extra star from me. But the place felt creepy, and the kitchen and bathrooms were dirty and smelly. It seemed like they hadn’t been cleaned in years.

I was afraid to sleep there, and I’m not sure it could have been worse. It felt like going 50 years back in time. You could see the walls had been thrown up, and probably other things too. I ended up finding somewhere else to stay even though I’d already paid :/
