The view from the window each morning was a lovely surprise, and it stayed quiet enough for the kids to sleep. The location is terrific, with everything interesting within walking distance. The whole stay was wonderful, right in the heart of Prague.

Looking out from my nomadic desk at the river, Charles Bridge, and the Castle beyond, I started thinking I could live here for good. It’s a stunning apartment, and I doubt there’s a better base for exploring Prague.

Bellevue Staré Město takes its name from the French phrase "belle vue," meaning "beautiful view." From the house on Smetana Embankment, you can see Hradčany and the Vltava River. Its richly ornamented Dutch Neo-Renaissance design is unusual among Czech buildings, and Konstantin Mráček designed it in the mid-19th century. A large, square tower with Neo-Renaissance details dominates the building, with a tall bay window at its corner. Painters once had studios on the top floor, including a space used for a time by Austrian painter Oskar Koloschka. The luxury restaurant Bellevue occupied the ground floor until it closed in 2021. Soviet army commanders lived in the house from May to November 1945, after the liberation of the Czechoslovak people.
