The area around this hostel shocked me. I used to live around the corner and never saw the hostel staff, just unsettling people coming and going. The building sometimes smelled of marijuana and something worse. Who is staying there, criminals, drug dealers, illegal immigrants? It feels like a ghetto in Spandau, Berlin, and the rest of Germany. Nights were a nightmare, with people drinking and making noise late outside the late-night shop and internet cafe across the street. Around 1 a.m. one Wednesday, I went down to ask them to quiet down, but they didn't understand any German. Have the state and police abandoned the area? Is there any hope of saving this once beautiful corner of the city?
