Pension Marie

The place is tucked around the back of a building, in a corner where construction was happening. I don't know how unusual that setup is for Berlin, but the corridor lights stay off unless you switch them on yourself. At night there's a lot of darkness, and the lights switch back off after a minute or two. It gets pretty scary, especially when you step out into the hallway. My room was on the first floor, with windows facing the public courtyard, and the walls were thin enough to let in noise from both inside and outside the building. Those things left me feeling not very safe or cozy as a solo female traveler. The room itself was very clean, though, and staff were attentive. I picked the place because it was near my work dealings and within my budget. Transport was not bad, but not amazing either. I guess I got what I paid for.
