The one good thing was the central yet quiet location, and the bed linens were clean. The price, though, was outrageous. A quick look around after check-in turned up mold in the bathroom, a dirty heater, chipped toilet seats, no toilet paper, and a grimy shower curtain. In the kitchen, the microwave, stove, and trash can were all dirty. The living room curtains were broken, the lampshade was torn, the bedroom mattresses sagged, and a light didn’t work. The very large balcony was completely filthy, among other things.

The only good things were the huge terrace and the great location. Everything else was filthy: grime from previous guests on the toilet seat and bowl, every light switch dirty, a sticky bedside table, and a shower head covered in limescale. The wallpaper was peeling everywhere, the sofa was stained, nothing had been vacuumed or mopped, and the bathroom exhaust was completely moldy.

At least they provided towels and bed linens. The rest of the place was in rough shape: the kitchen had clearly seen better days, and the living room armchair felt greasy. The mattresses were so worn down you could feel the springs. The bathroom was filthy, with an old, unwashed shower curtain and broken sink, toilet seat, and towel rack. Totally run-down.

There’s a difficult situation at Checkpoint Plaza in Berlin Mitte. Since the owner retired and the property management company Last was dissolved, two management companies are now competing with each other. It’s a luxury apartment building, but it’s showing its age.
