Max Hostel

It felt warm and cozy during my January off-season stay. A pleasant experience, and I sincerely recommend it.

I liked the hostel's location, the building and rooms had an old-fashioned, cozy feel, and the price was fair. But an incident in the shared kitchen left me feeling unsafe. A man had left dirty dishes in the sink. When I asked if he could wash them, he exploded at me verbally, saying things like all Germans were disturbed, I couldn't tell him what to do, I was mentally sick, and he didn't respect people like me. He kept going, and after I moved his dishes, he put them back on mine. It came completely out of the blue and felt extreme. I tried to raise it with the manager the next morning, but she took about 15 hours to deal with it. In the end she only warned him. He continued occupying the kitchen and leaving dishes in the sink, which seemed fine with the manager. After that I only went in briefly to get something and didn't use the kitchen. I thought about leaving early because I no longer felt safe, but the manager acted so late that I stayed one more night. I've read other comments saying solo female travellers have similar problems with long term solo male guests like this man. Management needs to take stronger action, or people who behave badly will keep getting away with it while ordinary guests leave. I also think it's inappropriate to put one woman and one man in a room together, as happened to me with someone else. I think many women wouldn't feel safe in that situation.

I was after somewhere central on a small budget, and check-in was super easy. I'm rarely moved to write a review, but this place earned one. What you get depends on what you're looking for. I wasn't after luxury, yet I found a little gem 💎👝

I’ve loved my day here while visiting Bonn. It feels like home, thanks in part to the incredibly welcoming, friendly owners. Great location too. Highly recommend!
