We found Guesthouse Hugo online before our family’s multi-day canoe trip on the Lahn, and Kanu Lahn-Dill arranged the booking. That was fantastic service, since we barely had to organize anything ourselves. The guesthouse is near the river in Tiefenbach-Braunfels, about a ten-minute walk from the Lahn, and is handy for canoeists as well as cyclists on the R7 route. The house sits at the edge of the village and has seven rooms, four shared bathrooms, and two well-equipped kitchens for self-catering. There’s also a covered terrace overlooking a natural garden, plus a well-stocked drinks fridge. You settle up for drinks with the housekeepers at breakfast. The rooms were cozy, with tasteful rustic furnishings. Wildlife themes run through the whole house: duck’s nest, fox’s den, hare’s form, rabbit burrow, sparrow’s and little owl’s nest, and even a heron room. The soft sand colors and muted browns suit the theme, and we were told most of the furniture came from France. Carvings and details on the antiques make the place feel elegant but still cozy. We booked a barbecue package through Kanu Lahn-Dill and cooked it at the grill in front of the terrace on a wonderfully quiet evening. We had the salads we’d ordered too, and a cold drink from the fridge. After washing our dishes in the shared kitchen, we turned in. For someone used to city noise, the quiet countryside night was unusual, and we slept even better for it. At breakfast we chatted with other guests, including some who’d been out late at the local pub. They told us, “Oskar’s has the best schnitzel for miles around!” The lively conversation gave us plenty of ideas for another holiday on the Lahn. The staff were friendly and attentive, and everything about our stay was perfect. We’ll definitely be back, next time in the holiday apartment, so we can explore the Lahn Valley from Tiefenbach. We didn’t get nearly enough time to see Braunfels Castle.
