Altes Forsthaus Braunlage

The venison was very well prepared, and the soup was great. The fried potatoes were good, but the Brussels sprouts were soft and a bit uninspired. I had the feeling that was where the cost cutting started. I suspect the soup used a Maggi base, which isn’t terrible, but it’s not what I expect with venison at this price. This is a dining-only review. I wasn’t disappointed that I went, but I’ll try other places in the area before coming back. And the espresso? Avoid it.

We were staying at a nearby pension and came here for breakfast. The service was friendly and the food was great: lots of fresh, warm buns, meats and cheeses, plus scrambled and hard-boiled eggs. Wonderful, and reasonably priced.

Daniel took great care of all six guests, and the atmosphere was great. The food was very good too. He was key to turning around what was supposed to be a bad day. Thank you, Daniel. It would be lovely if he were there when we return.

We had a short break between Christmas and New Year and found this place online. It turned out to be a very good choice. The location is central, opposite the ice rink and a short walk from Wurmberg. Our room was large, modern, and absolutely spotless. Breakfast was continental, with boiled or scrambled eggs. It was perfectly fine, and coffee was served at the table. The Forsthaus Restaurant felt cosy and rustic, and our evening meal was delicious, with very good service at a reasonable price. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We like a cup of tea first thing, so we brought our own kettle, though we could have got one from the restaurant. We’d definitely stay at the Forsthaus again, in winter or summer. There’s lots to do in the Harz!
