Getting into Wartburg Castle was the biggest hassle for us. The ticket desks are meant to open at 10, though ours started selling tickets at 9:40. Places on each tour are limited, and by around noon there were lines for tickets and entry. Parking also gets harder to find later, so I’d arrive early to improve your chances of getting the time you want and a space nearby. We bought the €2 photo permit, which allows photos without flash. Plenty of other visitors took pictures without one, and our guide didn’t check who had paid. I follow the rules, so I’d buy the permit again, but it felt unfair to those of us who paid when others didn’t. The castle itself is well worth a visit. Set on a rocky plateau in Eisenach, Thuringia, it dates back to the 11th century and is closely tied to Martin Luther, who sought refuge there. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1999. Give yourself at least an hour for the Romanesque palace and museum. It’s a beautiful place for anyone interested in history or architecture.

This was my second time at Wartburg, and I’d happily go again. The Palas tour costs €13, but the history and artwork inside make it worth the price. For sweeping views, climb the Bergfried keep. It was sunny during my visit, and the panorama was breathtaking. There’s also a great viewpoint tucked away near the entrance. Before the main gate, take the path behind the two cannons on the left for a striking view of the fortress. If you’re near Eisenach, don’t miss Wartburg. It lives up to its reputation as a major German landmark.

So much culture packed into one place: Wartburg, Eisenach, Erfurt, Luther, St. Elizabeth, and Richard Wagner’s Tanhäuser Opera. Excellent castle, and highly recommended if you’re visiting middle Germany!

The castle is in good condition, with an armory to see and a tower where you can look out over the area. Definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby. I only recently noticed Wartburg at the start of the LP music video for One last time. You can drive up, and there’s a parking lot next to the castle. We were unlucky and couldn’t park there, but found additional spaces in the city below, with buses going up to the castle. You can also walk one of the hiking trails, which have lots of scenic views.
